Hiring a Caravan.
If you are tempted to take a touring caravan holiday but you wonder whether you can justify the financial expense of buying, maintaining, insuring and storing your first caravan, why not hire one for a holiday first.
The first thing to check is whether your car is suitable for towing and the size caravan it can tow.
The person from whom you are hiring should be able to tell you, as will the AA and the RAC. The laws relating to towing caravans can appear confusing. The DVLA website will explain everything to you. (www.dvla.gov.uk)
You will need to fit your vehicle with a towball and standard “twin” electrics.
Select a van which is the smallest your family can live in comfortably. Find out what amenities come with the caravan. Many companies provide TV aerials but do not provide TVs.
It is worth checking how much instruction is provided before you leave the hirer.
The costs of hiring will vary from company to company so it is worth shopping around. They will include the hire, comprehensive motor insurance and damage deposit.
If you are travelling abroad you will incur an additional cost per week to cover the extra insurance cost. You will need to provide your own personal insurance and fully comprehensive breakdown and recovery insurance. There can be penalties should you return the caravan late.
